I come from Hungary.
We have around 40 channels if you have cable and some 150 if you have satellite. Every town has its own local channel too, in addition.
The number of Hungarian channels is around 50, but half of these are actually internationa channles with Hungarian subtitles or dubbing (Cartoon Network, for example).
There are 4 national state channels, 2 of them are international.
There used to be license fee, and I've heard it is planned again to re-introduce it. Currently you only need to pay for your subscription (= which channels do you watch. The cheapest subscription is about €4, the most expensive €40).
We still have analogue broadcasting, so the quality perhaps is not the best, but I think it's good enough. Consequently, digital services are not as widespread and developed as in Western Europe.
Beside the Hungarian channels, most foreign channels are English or German language. Since we don't have large minorities, there are only short programmes in their languages.
Advertising and broadcasting are strictly controlled. Unfortunately, the controlling committee is appointed by politicians, so objectivity is not guaranteed, although the channels must stay unbiased by law. There are 4 categories for the programmes based on violance, religion or sex:
-no restrictions (news, sport, Teletubbies... etc.)
-parental guidance for children below 12 (Pokémon, soap operas... etc.)
-not recommended for people under the age of 16 (most good movies, action and erotic movies) - these can be only shown after 9
-not recommended for people under the age of 18 (porn, horror, extremely violent or deviant programmes, Ali G, X-Files) - these can be shown only after 10.
The two largest channels are RTL Klub and TV2. They both resemble the international trends: currently popuilar American series, reality shows, blockbusters, talk shows, tabloid magazines.

Number of channels vary I have about 60 channels on regular cable but there are hundreds available on digital cable or dish.
There is one national public network and a few regional ones
No licence fees, about a dozen channels can be viewed for free but there are cable charges if you subscribe.
The quality of the reception is generally good and reliable, the programming is not.
Mostly english language, but several french channels also. An aboriginal network broadcasts in a few native languages and some stations have programs in other languages. In larger cities there are two or three channels that broadcast programs in different languages. If they broadcast in only one language it is english or french.

I have digital cable, with about 200 channels, including several music (audio only) channels (I hate those). There's no "License" charge, but there is a monthly subscription charge. The quality is excellent -- plus you can get High-Definition, if you're so inclined.
Right now, we can get programs in English and Spanish.

i live in the philippines, and i have a cable operator that has like around 80 channels (unless i subscribe for the most elite subscription, which has around 150 channels). I have to pay for it, however, and it's pretty expensive. If one doesn't have a cable here, he or she gets only up to 10 channels.
Our state broadcaster is nbn 9 and they're pretty biased because they're on our president's side (like... duh!) but we also have untv, which tackles the admin. we have sect-based channels and we also have a lot of commercially-owned commercials, and the two leading channels-- GMA and ABS-CBN-- fight each other to death. they also have their sister channels (Studio 23, ANC, Lifestyle Network and Myx for ABS-CBN and Qtv 11 for GMA) and own international channels for Filipinos abroad. We also have our own MTV, and we have channels to entertain us with foreign shows (Solar is the leading company for this.)
the quality is pretty ok. forgive me for saying this though, but i generally prefer watching foreign shows than local ones because i think a lot of them are very riddiculous. and there are some foreign channels that don't go well here.
aside from tagalog and english, we have other dialects for regional channels (although tagalog is the most common dialect) and there are bisaya-language shows. we also have korean, japanese, chinese, spanish, indian, arabic, german, french, and since we have c-span and voa, we also have more language to fill this entry in one channel. that means i can watch french movies while i study french and watch a russian-language news channel for fun. hehehehe.

I am in the US. I get about 150 channels. We pay a higher price for more channels. There are premium channels too that i don't pay for. The quality is great. Whatever your interests are there is a show for you. Whether it is cooking, religion, sitcoms, home decorating or sports there is channel there. Most are in English but there are quite a few in Spanish and a few in Chinese.
