For a nice looking auto-ball and one that will keep some resale value, get an official major league baseball and have your player sign it on the "sweet spot" (the thin area between the stiches opposite from the logo. Traditionally, if you are getting a team to sign a ball, the manager gets the honor of signing the sweet spot.
There are actually some players that refuse to sign the sweet spot to discourage resale of the ball.
Oh yeah, and have them use a ball point pen, sharpies tend to bleed over time on a ball...

Try to get an Official Major League baseball. You can find these at the stadium or at a sporting goods store. I've even seen them at Target. They usually come in a display case and they cost around 15 dollars. When you give the ball to the player, they usually sign it on the "sweet spot" without you having to tell them to. And like the guy before me said, have them use a ball point pen instead of a sharpie. Then all you have to do is go up to the player and nicely ask him for his autograph. Most players are usually pretty good about giving out autographs as long as your not rude.

You can get real major league balls at the park, or other spots - you can get them on e-Bay too. Have them sign on the sweet spot - they know where it is. If you are having more than one player sign the ball, save the sweet spot for a star player. At spring training, the players know not to sign the sweet spot for the most part. The manager has the right to sign there. At least the teams I have seen and gotten autographs from do that. And have your own pen - a fine Sharpie works great.

Regular clothly baseball.
You can get them at your local sporting goods store.
Get the play to sign either where the laces form a U shape or inbetween the two sets of laces. Just somewhere with open space and no writing to interfere with the signerature.

1. Any kind of baseball
2. Modells, Sports Authority, or (if you really wanna go on the edge) Wal-Mart
3. Sign it wherever you see them.

If you get John Santana's, pleas e-mail me and send it to me.
