This may seem like a weird question, but if you were compiling the best of all the armies in the world's history who would you have at each battalion? (ex. Who is your infantry? Who are the archers?) Thanks for your help.

My fantasy army would consist of the following categories"
HEAVY CAVALRY
MEDIAM CAVALRY
LIGHT CAVALRY
HORSE ARCHERS
HEAVY INFRANTRY
MEDIUM INFRANTY
LIGHT INFRANTRY
FOOT ARCHERS
MISSILE THROWERS
CHARIOTS BOTH HEAVY AND LIGHT
ELEPHANTS
SIEGE EQUIPMENT
ENGINEERS
LOGISTICS
COMMANDOS
COMMAND.

The heavy cavalry would consist of the knights of medieval Europe. At a pure charge of heavy cavalry there were no cavalry in history who could match them. They were almost unstoppalbe in such circumstances.

The medium cavalry would constist of the cavalry units(TUMANS) of the Mongol Hordes. They were born to the strirrup and were trained in general cavalry work like no other in history. In fact they built the largest land empire in history on this.

The best light cavalry in history were the Numidian cavalry who fought in the second Punic War. They were fast and manouveralbe and very deadly with their light spears. At their time they were considered the best cavalry in the world.

Horse Archers: You can't go beyond the magnificant horse archers of the Mongols. They were equipped with two composite bows(one of the stronest bows in history ) and with six sheaths of arrows. All Mongol cavalry wore silk shirts. Silk goes in with the arrow and you only have to pull both the silk and the arrow out. Less casualties and fatalities. They could put together a rate of arrow fire that was the medieval equivilant of the machine gun. They were extemely deadly and efficient at the "PARTHIAN BOW". Where a horse archer road at full gallop and shot an arrow into a small target-both forwardly and backwardly in position. They also built the largest land empire in history.

Heavy Infrantry-well what can you say. The most deadly and lethal-organised and disciplined heavy infrantry was the Roman Legions. Nothing like them in this department has been seen before or since on the earth. They were highly trained in hand to hand, formation, engineering, tactics and marching. They were organised into two to three rotating lines of lethal military teeth(HASTATI, PRINCEPTS AND TIARRI(PILUS in imperial times). They were led by experts-Centurions-experience and tough. They had deadly formations-one , the TURTLE(TORQUEDO) was tested with a fully armed war chariot on top of it and was only broken once-siege of Jerusalem: 70 A.D.- with flamming oil poured down a ramp. Their equiptment consisted of a 2 spears: PILUM which they threw at the enemy to disable and weigh down shields and a short sword: GLADIUS- a very lethel weapon that cut like no other hand weapon in history. All protected by an oblong shield: SCUTUM which protected completely, was extremely strong and ideal for formations. One of the most, if not the most unenviable positions in history was opposite a Roman Legion at the start of a battle-an awesome sight to behold. No infranty could stand against them. Facing them was like facing one military mincing machine that fought with one mind. A terrifying prospect indeed.

The best medium infrantry were the ARGIVES or SILVER SHIELDS of Alexander the Great. They were very well trained and disciplined and went throught many battles with him. They were considered his elite infrantry. Very flexable and tough.

The PELTASTS of the ancient Greeks and Macadonians were the best light infrantry in history. They were equipped with deadly light spears that they could throw and wield with deadly effect. They too had vast campaign and battle experience. Very flexable and fit. In fact Alexander used them to catch up and hem in the Massagaetea-a horse archer-nomadic peoples whom he encountered beyond the river Oxus and in which he displayed his talent for inovation.

For Missiles throwers I would choose the extremely well equipped and trained Auxilury dart and javelin throwers and the native Roman and Baelaric slingers of the Roman Army. Very well trained and equipped like the legionaries and extremely fit , they could put a disciplined volley like nothing seen.

For Foot Archers there is really only one. The English longbowmen. They literally mowed down the French and European knights at the battles of Cecry and Agincourt with their three foot arrows shot from six foot bows with devestating ability to go through armour and reach their target at up to 400 yards. They could unlease 6 shots per minute comfortably. Strong, far reaching, accurate and deadly.

For Chariots I would have for heavy the Assyrian heavy chariots holding 6 men. Very heavy they were like ancient tanks. For the light I would have a combination of HYSKOS and NEW KINGDOM EGYPTAIN chariots. The Hyksos for their speed and surprise and the Egyptains for their ability to stand against surprising and terrifying circumstances: eg: The Battle of Kadesh in 1289 B.C.

For heavy Elephants I would have the Indian Elephants of Porus who faced Alexander at Hydaspes. His elephants were very well trained and armoured. For light elephants I would have both the elephants of Pyhhrus and Hannible for their daring and expert handling by MAHBOUTS. One such elephant carried Hannible throughout years of his campaigned. Pyhhru's elephants attacked the Romans, panicked them and won the battles of Herculaeum and Asculum.

For siege equipement and artillery you can't go past the Roman Army. They had BALLISTA( rock throwing), CATIPULTS(arrow and spear throwing) and giant RASPIOBALLISTAS(six foot bold thrower that could kill lots at a time and could break up ranks and formations.) They had field artiller units (10 Ballista and 60 Catipults plus others per legion) that had ranges of 300 pounds up to 400 yards and vast amounts of siege equipment including all types of ancient artillery, vast systems of ramps and the employment of lines(ditches, walls and stockades) of holding lines in sieges-both from within and without. But I would throw in some Mongol artillery: their Mangonels and especially those cannon that shot out melted fat.

For logistics I would have the Roman army. They could organise everthing from a six month campaign to a ten year siege. At Masada they had a giant siege tower go up a ramp up a mountain and with the aid of gears at the back kept the thing on level angle to the ramp. They had units such as supply, engineering, medical, provost marshal, fire units, specialist and command.. So sophisticate-like we have today.

For Commandos you would have to have the NINJA. Trained from childhood in all the arts of stealth and self defence- they had a very deadly form of unarmed combat. They could jump up six feet and jump down twenty. They would wait for days beneath a lord's castle before they would swim up the moat and kill the lord in a very nasty way as he sat on the toilet. They were very well equipped as well. I would throw in a sprinkling of Sammurai as well. They were superbly trained also.

For command: I would have the STRATEGOS( the planning general for strategy) and a supreme battle commander(the tactical commander for battles themselves) The strategic command would be SUN WU TZU considered by many as one of the two supreme military genius's of all time. The other I would have as the tactical commander-Alexander the Great. The cavalry would be under Ghenghis Khan assisted by Ramaseys II - for the chariots sub command-for his performance at the battle of Kadesh, infrantry under Julius Caesar(assisted by Scipio Africannus), the artillery under Napoleon Bonaparte, the logistics under Caesar's leutenant- Lucullus(a brilliant organiser), the Commandos under Sparticus( a brilliant guerilla fighter) assisted by Armenius whoes brillant guerilla tactics wiped out three Roman legions (XVII, XVIII and XIX th) at Teutonberg Wald(the black forest in
9 A.D. I would have Marshal Devout for his talent in holding formations in very difficult circumstances as per the battle of Jena where he held off the whole Prussian army with just one corp. I would have Marshal Michael Ney for his tenacious and brillant covering of the retreat in unbelievalbe circumstance in Russia in 1812. As Napoleon said of him: "As a division commander, he is good, as a corp commander, he is fair, as an independent commander, he is not very good-but as a rallier of half hearted men- he has no equal in the world." And I would have General Robert E. Lee and his wing man-Stonewall Jackson and his corp commander-Longstreet as generalist commanders. The first performed the greatest acts of tactics and strategy on American soil in history. The second held so greatley that he was given the name "Stonewall". The third was a voice of wisdom, control and reason by which if Lee had have listened-Gettysberg would very well have ended very very differentley.

This is my fantasy army. You have cavalry such as the Knights, Mongols, Numudians- chariots of Hyksos and Egyptains, Elephants of Hannible and Pyrrhus, the English Longbow, Alexander's Silver Shields, Roman Auxilury missilers, the awesome might of the Roman and Mongol siege and artillery machines, the logistical talent and efficiency of the ultimate empire-Rome, the light infrantry and calavlry of the legendary Peltast of Alexander the Great and the Numidians-the best light cavalry in history, Ninjas - trained from childhood in the deadly and stealthy arts, and Sammurai and the greatest command talent in history. What an army. What such could be done, by those who are in command of such an army. What could these talented and pheonominal array of military genius's not do? And the experience in fighting and command. I pity the enemy who has to be mowed down by the English longbow. And heaven help the army or armies that stand in the way of the legendary, historically feared, lethal and deadly military mincing machine-the Roman Legions. It would not be a battle. It would be a sacrifice. Putting this into history would not be putting the cat amoung the pigeons. It would be like putting Tyrannasaurus Rexes. God help whoever came across such an armed and guided force. God help them.

This is a bit of a tricky question, since the technology of warfare has advanced so much over time. A Roman legion, for example, wouldn't fare too well against an M1-A1 tank. However, if we limit ourselves to the period before hand-held firearms (when warfare was more "civilized") then the question becomes more interesting.

For range, accuracy, and power, very few weapons could stack up to the english longbow. So the archers in my army would have to come from there. Without question, the finest light cavalry to ever take the field would have to be the Mongol hordes of Genghis Khan. And to hold it all together, the Spartan hoplite phalanx at the infantry. Should the need arise for heavy cavalry, the war elephants of Hannibal of Carthage would be a nice choice. And last but not least, to command would be Alexander the Great of Macedonia.

I would feel pretty comfortable taking the field with a force like that...so long as I never had to go up against a U.S. carrier battle-group :)

Zetes and Calais, sons of the North Wind, unique Argonaut crewmembers. Cúchulainn, "The Hound of Ulster", mythical Irish hero. Väinämöinen, the mythical hero from the Finnish epic "Kalevala". Arjuna, between the super heroes from the classic Hindu chronicle "Mahabarata". There are others, too many to show, yet those are evoked first. i actually won't be in a position to fill the checklist up with 10 without skirting the line into historic characters. And possibilities have been critically constrained by using the requirement that those be FICTIONAL characters.
