That is where character studies and analysis come in handy. Read the book The Novelist. It is a novel about a famous author teaching a CW class. During the class, she writes a book for them demonstrating the techniques she uses to write. She talks a lot about character analysis and study. She takes file cards and writes all her notes on the character on one side along with the character's name. On the other side, she finds a photo in a catalog, magazine, newspaper, anywhere - that resembles the character in her mind's eye. Once you truly KNOW your character, the voice will come. You should know your characters so well that if I asked you "What did XXX eat for breakfast yesterday?" Or "What is XXX's favorite color?" or "Does your character brush his teeth up and down or side to side?" you will KNOW because that is what makes that person a fully rounded character and not just words on a page. You are having trouble because you do not know enough about this character. Put the pen down and start working on studies. When you know your character backwards and forwards - then go back to writng and poof! he or she will have a voice. Also look into Barnes and NOble University - they offer free CW classes every month. All you have to do is register. If you want, add me to your contacts, because I plan on opening a site for young writers very soon, only right now Im trying to finish up a book. Pax - C.

Dude... no voice, no novel.

Figure out who he/she is. Likes and dislikes, background story, affinities, talents. Make him a semi-well-rounded human. Once you know who exactly he/she is, I'm sure you'll find his voice.

Also, give him a purpose. A goal. A dream and an attitude (not necessarily, a badboy/girl one, just. AN attitude).

Good luck!

Make me care about him. Make me feel and see what he sees and feels.
