At about the halfway point of a 300 mile trip, my 2000 Ranger 4x4 started making one hellacious noise. It seems to be coming from the front of the truck, and is a very loud humming noise (I thought it sounded like a bomber in one of those old WWII movies). If I stop, it stops. Once I restart, its not there until it kicks in at about 45 MPH.

The good news is that whatever it is didn't leave me stranded in the boondocks. It made it back with no apparent damage other than the noise.

When I take it to the mechanic tomorrow, will I need heart pills?

tony: They're new as of February. It's not that kind of a roar...more like someting mechanical is stuck and spinning in some way that it's not supposed to.

Its probably a front wheel bearing. Should be about $200 including labor.

Maybe, but then again, maybe not. The reason I'm hedging my bet is because the cause could be something as simple as a bent fan, loose heat shield or something similar. If, however, it's an axle, joint or similar problem, better break out the nitroglycerin tablets.

Whatever it is, get it fixed (even if it costs a bloody fortune) as it probably won't fix itself!

sounds like it could be the gears in the front axle or could be cv joints in front wheels probably would be a safe guess to say price range of 100 - 300

if the noise is in the axles you may have a automatic lockout bad. if the noise is in the engine and the 8 th digit in the VIN is a E then it is junk.

May be a bearing that has gone bad...could it possibly be your fan is bent or a piece of the fan housing is loose banging against the fan?
