When we're on vacation we just wing it. It seems like every time we try to plan out trips we're completely dissapointed. We rented a car from Orlando (after Disney) and ended up on the Gulf side of Florida and had a great time. We found beautiful places to stay (no crowds). Venice was really nice,The Sanibal Islands very pretty all spontaneous and great time.

The area you plan to visit plays a big part in what you want to check on.
If you are going to the East coast for NASA or Palm Beach, If you're going to north central for Orlando, if you're going to the west coast Tampa bay area,
if you're going to Miami or down the keys.
Each of these has totally different experiences.
Just start with the FL chamber of commerce and the area you want to visit. They will give you a good start on the ideas and recommend travel books.
Of course right from the start, the AAA books are pretty good.

That would really depend on where in Fl you are traveling too. I think that the web offers the best way to research these things as it is more likely to be up to date where a book may not be.
