Pediasure ...?

I have tried everything imaginable to get my son to take formula. I am weaning from nursing. He is 10 months old. I am 19 weeks pregnant. I can't physcially nurse him any longer. He will not take formula with a sippy cup, finger fed, spoon fed, bottle or in a cup. Watering it down doesn't work.

The only thing that seems to work is mixing it with his solid foods or juice but that isn't healthy at all ... BUT ... then he isn't getting fluids. He hates water. Won't drink watered down juice and I can't give him just juice all day long .... for the next 3 months.

So my question .... is can i start my son on a nutrition supplement such as pediasure or carnation instant breakfast with soy milk???? Or is he too young? Any suggestions are more than welcome .. thats why I am here ...

I am going to check with his pedi. in two weeks at his well baby check up but thats too far for him to go without proper nutrition so looking for a quick answer here .. thanks in advance

I have tried mixing breastmilk soley with the formula .. he spits it out!

Also I am weaning for personal reasons with him being so you and being pregnant. I know to breastfeed him til' he's 2 but I have had such a horrible experience with bfing him for the last 3 months that i can't do it anymore physically, emotionally and metnally.

I hopefully will be able to get an appointment tommorow! If not talk to my doctor!

I also have to note .... i am a military wife. Family members live an hour away ... i have no friends where i live and my son won't let anyone babysit him. Husband is deployed right now. Thats why i am asking for suggestions .. that is out ot the picture of having someone else feed him. And the few times we've tried hes resisted full on .. and starved

I am on the verge of drying up .... 5 months pregnant.

I will try diluting the juice more tommorow and see what the pediatrician says ....

barely enough milk to even get him satisfied to stop crying !

You could try giving him goat's milk instead of formula. The composition of goat's milk is closer to human milk and will not cause the intestinal problems that cow's milk will at this age. It should also taste much better (formula tastes terrible!). You could also look into donor milk, if you have a milk bank in your area.

You should also know, in case you are weaning solely because of your pregnancy, that continuing to nurse is generally safe during pregnancy, and tandem nursing is also a very viable proposition. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization recommend breastfeeding for at least 2 years.

At 10 months he does not need formula nor breast milk. There is no reason for him NOT to have it and its good for him, but he doesn't need it. He can drink whole milk or fortified soy milk.

Do not give him pediasure unless he is actually dehydrated, it has TO many salts in it for normal consumption.

Also, just keep in mind that it can take up to 20 times of offering something to a baby before he will accept it. Keep offering milk and food. He doesn't really need water yet. Though juice is not ideal, you can dilute it by half so there is not so much sugar content (just make sure you're not doubling the quanity to do it).

If you're worried about his hydration, you can just express and give it to him in a bottle. Or when you said you physically can't nurse him did you mean you dried up?

Check with your ped by phone. Most infants at 10 months can drink cows milk. My cousin's GF had to quit breastfeeding earlier than planned and found that she could do part cow's milk, part formula, gradually increasing the amount of formula. This was with her ped's ok. Your ped knows your child's health and can determine if this is an acceptable route. Also, try having someone ELSE feed him. He's accustomed to nursing with you and maybe this would help ease the switch.

I wouldn't bother with Pediasure, but it is also marketed for older children, not infants.

try nuby straw cups my son was breastfed i also stopped nursing at 15 months bc i found out i was pregnant but anyways these cups were the only ones he would drink anything from which i found at probably 13 or 14 months they don;t have to tip them which seems to be something that breastfed children don't understand right away and the straw doesn;t come out or let juice or milk spill out


also if he won;t drink the formula its understandable thats stuff is gross compared to breast milk (its sweet) my son wouldn;t drink cows milk how i got him to was i got that nestle strawberry mix for milk and added a normal amount in and he loved it then i slowly cut back more and more so i was only adding a little bit bc i don;t like him having alot of sugar at least at nite you could try adding a bit to formula a little bit of sugar for the strawberry taste won;t hurt at least he'll be getting what he needs GL

I would say talk to your Pediatrician. He is playing "tough time" with what he is used to I would pump and give him half breast milk and half formula...it will take time. Pediasure is great! But he may be too young as it is for when they are a year old. Call your Dr.

I wouldn't give him any of that without the advice of your pediatrician. Maybe they'll tell you over the phone or maybe they can squeeze an appointment for him tomorrow if they know you are having troubles with this.

call the pedi in the morning and ask him He is too young for me to say as I don't know weight medical history etc.
