I agree, it does depend on where you will be going.
In general, I would start with AAA, they have good guidebooks that provide a little information as well as some info on recommended hotels.
I would also check with any of the areas that you will be visiting, contact their tourism center and they will more than likely send you out some information. Also, check with any of the attractions or companies you will be using, for example, Disney has some brochures and DVDs. Also, there are a lot of companies that work specifically with certain areas or places of interest. For example, Birnbaums is a great Disney guide.
Other than that, look around on sites like Amazon or Barnes and Noble to get some reviews on books before buying. Frommers is one of the best known travel guides, but read the reviews and descriptions so you make sure you are getting a good guide that will also work for your situation.
You could also check with your library. The only problem with this is that many libraries have outdated books, even books that are only 2 or 3 years old can be nearly useless for planning a vacation to a popular area that may change quite a bit.
Finally, be sure to look around online. Some of the best sources for information when it comes to travel comes from right on the internet. The information is free and you can read only the information that applies to your situation, print it out, etc.
Hope this helps!

If Disney is your destination, I would get the Birnbaum's guide to Walt Disney World. That is the one that has worked best for us and we have looked at all of them. Also, there is one by Birnbaum's For Kids by Kids, if you will be going with children. I would also check out their website, which is below.
If you are not going to Disney or want other parts of Florida, I have heard the Fodor's guide book is pretty good. Very informative and insightfull for the rest of Florida and the beaches.

depends on WHERE in Florida you are travelling to...
if you are going to Disney, they will give you all the best maps of all their attractions
if you are going to say Daytona Beach ya might wanna just grab one of those guides they give tourists at the welcome center. (along with a nice orange juice if you're at the right one...)
there are plenty of vacation options around Florida...
just DRIVE CAREFULLY---Avoid US 19 if ya can!
Have FUN!
