I want to apply for scholarships.. specifically ones that require you to be mexican american, but I am not sure if I am.

My mother is from Mexico and my dad is from here in the U.S.
My mom says that I am not but I think I am.. but I am confused.

What are the Requirements to be considered mexican american and would I qualify?

Technically, yes. Your mom wants you to realize you are an American, but that's the beauty of America, we come in all races. But yeah, it's important that you state your ethnicity, it can give you an edge up on other applicants.

The best way to solve this question is to get the application materials on the scholarships and read the requirements. Some may mean a person who now lives in the United States, but was born in Mexico. Others may mean people of Mexican and American heritage. Since this phrase can be interpretted in two ways, you need to read the requirements on the individual scholarships.

(You are American first) You are Mexican American or hispanic as the census bureau lumped you into. Go for what you can get. Take advantage of your status since everyone else does. I am hispanic and don't use it to get ahead but that is just me. I function on my own with my own education, work and talents but there is nothing wrong with a little help if you are comfortable with getting things for free. I don't like or need free. I work myself.
