The importance of photosynthisis is that it is capturing the sun's energy. Chlorophyll in green plants uses the energy of sunlight to produce sugar... and keep the plant alive. Then, an animal (which we might eat) eats the plant - and acquires that energy. Or, we might eat the plant ourself and get the sun's energy. Or, we may be chilly and throw a few more logs on the fire - and enjoy heat energy from the sun via the energy trapped by the tree.
