I would say it could be a very good thing. It depends on if the paid work is worth it to you in the end. You could probably find a different job right off the bat, but if there is a certain one that is worth waiting for then it is probably worth it.

If it means you will eventually get to do your dream job and get paid for it then go for it! Doing a job you actually enjoy is a very rare thing so you should grab it with both hands!!

If your financial situation is such that it won't hurt you to do it, I say go for it. At the very least, you'll have the work experience from it, and you can put it on your resume as volunteer experience.

As long as you are able to take care of yourself (through another job or other means), there are only benefits to internships in careers you are interested in.

it is great but you really have to excel as a volunteer.
it is not automatic. it depends on how you perform.
