I was a little lost, and disturbed, but I think that in order to understand it you have to have played the video game...which i doubt i ever will.

Rose assisted Alessa in getting her revenge on the Cult, but as a result, she effectively ended her daughter's life, which was more accurately a "dream of life" which Dark Alessa tells us "must end". Sharon reunifies with her other self when she sees Dark Alessa ascend the ladder in the church balcony, despite her mother's warning to not open her eyes. This is evident at the end for three reasons:
1. The looks exchanged between Dahlia and Sharon/Alessa, as she leaves the Church.
2. The fact that Sharon/Alessa starts the car with her mind when Rose can't and makes the Road magically appear. After all, Dahlia tells us early on that "Only the Dark One opens and closes the door to Silent Hill."
3. The way Sharon/Alessa looks at Rose as she enters what she believes to be her house, and also the way she glares into the camera at the end.
In the end of the film, both Alessa and Rose remain trapped in the Foggy Dimension of Silent Hill. But have both not gotten exactly what they wanted throughout the course of the film: Rose, a daughter and Alessa, a loving mother, both bound to the other for eternity?

I was a bit confuse too....but I did manage to come to some sort of conclusion. In the last scene Rose and her daughter Sharon came home. Rose sat down on the white sofa. Then you see Rose's husband (Christopher) but he doesn't see Rose and Sharon.
This made me think that Rose and her daughter are still trapped in another dimension. That or they're already dead (from the car crashed in the beginning) and their souls are trapped in this world.

they are dead, the world they are in is actually purgatory, cuz there is a reason dark allesa is reffered to as "THE REAPER", grim reaper, devil, demon what ever you want to change that to... Dark allessa is like the devil, she sends out the cretures to punish the TRUE sinners, and since silent hill is "TAINTED" that means if you die in it you suddenly get sucked into the inferno, which is what i think the movie was modeled after DANTE'S INFERNO.... the mother and daughter and cop die while on the chase, and end up descending thorugh ell only to end up in purgatory, or the dream foggy state of peace and terror....and those who die in the movie are those who have been PUNISHED for their sin by DARK ALLESSA... i understood it AFTER i read Dante's inferno this year in 10th grade.... or more likely they are alive, like dante was, only trapped in a dead state

the audience wakes up and leaves the theater. well, maybe that was just me. i believe the mother and daughter died in the accident, and their soul's were trapped in both levels of silent hill (the foggy silent hill, as it wold appear to other souls trapped there, and 'dark' silent hill, represented by the nightmare of the girl with black hair) until they fixed what was wrong with the black haired girl (whose name escapes me).

They're dead (mom and daughter), but the husband is still alive. All 3 of them are in the same place at the same time, but a different dimension....(that's my interpretation...)
