1. In 1871, the city of Chicago was already huge.
Was in this sentence is the linking verb because it connects the subject of the verb (city of Chicago) to additional information about the subject.
Huge is the predicate adjective because it follows the linking verb (was) and modifies/directly refers to the subject of the sentence (Chicago).

2. Over 350,000 residents felt proud of their beautiful city.
Felt is the linking verb in this sentence. (Sometimes these verbs: appear, feel, grow, look, prove, remain, smell, sound, and taste are linking verbs; sometimes they are action verbs. If you can substitute am, is, or are for the verb and the sentence still sounds logical, you have a linking verb on your hands.)
Proud is the predicate adjective in this sentence because, again, it follows the linking verb, and modifies or directly refers to the subject of the sentence (residents).

Hope that helps, and good luck =D

A predicate adjjective is an adjective that comes after the verb, but describes the subject. (Linking verbs: is, be, am, are, was, were, been. Has, have, had, do, does, did. May, can, must, might, could, would, should. Shall, will--being!)
So, 1--subject: Chicago predicate adj: huge huge describes Chicago, comes after the linking verb was.
2. Proud modifies residents--felt is the verb.
