I would try deleting the drivers for your cd drive and restarting your computer, it will auto detect and reinstall new drivers. If that doesnt work you drive is probably damaged or dirty, try cleaning it or replace it.

this is quit a problem in older computers if in your case the computer is new than thsi can be covered in a warranty job

there is a number of reasions that the cd drive might not be working.

It colud be the software you are running and no the actual drive, search the manifactures website for a driver update.

otherwise you would be best off buying a new cd/dvd drive either a external one or another one internal one.

but before you rush out and buy a new cd drive it could simply be dirty. run a clean disk through the drive if this does not work try searching the internet under your computers brand home page and run a search there looking for drivers.

if none of the above solutions work you are best off buying a new drive.

Cheers

Hope this helps

ok if its still reading the system restore dvd then it still works so dont go replacing it quite yet. what happens when you put the disks in? also i wouldnt be surprised if your pc is set to not auto play disks, click 'start' then click 'my computer' then try to access the disk there. failing that then update the driver, failing that then update the firmware, just dont ask me to explain it ;)

I think you will have to replace. Here's a link to a step by step process to replace a DVD burner. http://compreviews.about.com/od/tutorials/ss/DIYCDDVD.htm

You can buy one from www.newegg.com (or many online retail stores) for under $40.

Have fun.
