i have short, bobbed, dark hair and wear a size 3. i was thinking an shorter cocktail-ish dress. opinions?

With your short, dark hair, I definitely agree that you should go short-ish.
Try a vintage dress, or one that looks like one, maybe with lace or an empire waist. Deep colors look great with dark hair, like really dark purple.

Don't do a long dress. Personally, I hate the rouching around the tummy, and a lot of cocktail-ish dresses have that. Maybe try a more simple dress and then go crazy with the shoes.

Shorter or long would probably work well. If you're on the petite side, be sure a cocktail dress, or a fun party dress hits you at the proper spot on your leg. Too long and it can cut you off funny, making you look shorter.

That is what i went with because i had a short hair and i'm really short so long dresses look weird. I thought i would be the girl in a shorter dress, but tons of girls were wearing them. Just make sure it is a really formal dress like one of the following;

Honestly, you can't go wrong with the little black dress. It is a girls secret weapon.
Have a safe and fun prom. Dont do anything you cant undo or that you'll regret.
