I can only go by what I personally do.
If I am finding out the answer by reading an already posted answer for the first time, then I don't answer the question, not even for the 2 points. I can get the 2 points elsewhere.
However if I don't see an answer, I "google" it, and THEN the answer is there, I'll answer it too. I did some work, I think I'm entitled to 2 points.
I'll also answer if I think I have something to ADD to the correct answer. For your hypothetical question, that would be unlikely, but suppose someone asked say "did Mario Lemieux ever have a 200 point season", and someone already said "no", sure, that is correct, but I may add "he did have a season where he had 199".

This question is a perfect example of that. I'm going to answer as well so I can get 2 points and hope that you pick my answer so I can get another 10. But usually people just pick the first correct answer so I'm not getting my hopes up.

For points. Also, if a question is just asked people don't see the other answers and then post their answer, but by the time their answer is there, there are a bunch of others, at least that is what happens to me.

to try to get the best answer so they can get points, for instince if you choose this as a best answer i will get 10 points instead of 2 points that i get for answering your question automatically, its almost like some kind of question and answer game.the more points you get the higher up you go in ranks & then it shows the people what kinds of answers they write up.when you put your mouse pointer over the persons avatar who answered you question it will tell you how many question they answered and the % of best answers they have so u can figure out if they are just answering for points or to help you.thats is what u gotta figure out.... I find it very useful when im needing to know legal stuff for my business and tax questions aswell.

To get points. Or a bunch of people will be answering at the same time. When they click on the question there is no answers.

Many times I have clicked " be the first to answer this question" and then when I click "submit" for my answer, there are several others who have also answered. Maybe they have faster computers than I do, or maybe it's yahoo's fault.
when I clisked to answer this question, there was one answer and all it said was "for points". sometimes people hit submit, then go back and add more, so their answer is at or near the top.

Sometimes its for the points, other times its just because people tend to read questions and not answers, and just answer without checking whether other people have gotten the answer yet.

Because when people are typing an answer other people are also typing answers and then they submit them and you got a whole bunch of answers.
I might take me a few minutes to type this answer.
When I started typing there was only one reply to your question.
When I submit there might be a few more.
Or maybe not.
note: while I was typing my answer....16 people submitted answers

Yes, it is for the two points.
Also, some users think that the asker might choose their answer as the best, which means 10 extra points.
