Gorilla's generally test at about an IQ of 80, which is smarter thn many people I know. This is taking human-centric tests which do not take into account their gorilla-ness, too. For example, the famous Kiki had on her test a question which asked her where she would go in a rainstorm; out in the open, under a tree, or into a house. Of course Kiki chose the tree, but the test gave her a lower IQ rating for choosing that over a house. There is substantial evidence that Gorillas are really much closer to us in intelligence than we care to admit. The case is no different with chimps. The are even known to use tools, they have recently been discovered to be making tools which they use as weapons, and they have very complex societies. Orangutangs may be the smartest, though. They do very well with complex abstract thought, which they seem to have developed so they can plan and remember very specific routes through the treetops and canopy so they can travel extensively without haveing to go down to the ground. But they are not as socially developed, leading very solitary lives. Nonetheless, when they live in captivity and relate socially with humans or other orangutangs, they do very well and don't seem to be missing any of the really important things.
I don't necessarily think we are any smarter than any other animals; we all just do things differently. We judge things by our own lights, but that does not necessarily make our judgements true.
