Hi Lubie,

You have to connect by phone or by Internet. TiVo must be connected.

It won't tie up your phone at all. If you don't have a wired phone hook it to your Internet.

You can absolutely do this. I don't have a phone jack nearby my TiVo and therefore decided to see how long I could run TiVo before being shutdown without local programming or lacking a guide. I have yet to experience this! It's been 1 year now without the phone line connected to the TiVo box.

One drawback however, is that you get new messages everyday that you haven't made a call. You just need to clear this and you're ready to watch TiVo and still have all the Season's Pass settings intact.

To add to norm, who is completely right, is that you need a phone line or network connection to sync up the TV guide and subscription information. Without it, it would be impossible for the Tivo know when and what channel to record a program.
