I agree that hello ban does sound like hello man. Perhaps they have a strange accent that makes it sound a little different.

But if not, then I think that ban is a word from an asian language. It means hello, friend.

Here ban is an addressed person. One may use it a short cut of any thing but the correct meaning of ban is a Governor of Banat or military division (especially Hungarian).
