I would like to know about the United States or other countries. Also, if I was to get married to my partner outside the US, is it recognized within the US?

Gays can get married in six places in the world: the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, and the state of Massachusetts. In addition, Israel recognizes gay marriages performed abroad. More than forty countries offer civil unions/domestic partnerships to gay couples, which are similar to marriage but with varying degrees of rights. Some of these countries include: France, Germany, Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and some areas in Mexico. In the US, Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey, California, Hawai'i, and DC all offer civil unions or domestic partnerships to gay couples.

As to whether or not gay marriages performed abroad are legal here in the states, in 49 of them a gay marriage would not be recognized under any circumstance (with a bit of luck that'll change soon:). Massachusetts will accept those performed abroad. No same sex marriage is recognized at the federal level.

Same sex marriage is legal in the countries of Belgium, Canada, Netherlands, South Africa, & Spain. Israel recognizes gay marriages performed in other countries. It is legal in the US state of Massachusetts for state marriage benefits, but these benefits do not extend to the federal level of government due to the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996. The federal government of the United States also does not recognize any same sex marriage from another country.

Although not marriage, same-sex partnerships are recognized in Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Iceland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, and the US states of Vermont, Connecticut, & New Jersey with partial recognition in California, Hawaii, Maine, and the District of Columbia.

Canada is one place. I think also maybe Switzerland or Sweden. I don't think you would have any standing for your legal marriage in the US. I know here in OZ - if gays get married overseas - they don't have any rights back here.

I don't know about down in the states, don't think they are down with all of that yet, but if you'd like, come on up here to BC (Canada). We're very gay in BC.
