That light travels in both waves and photons

2007-03-22 15:15:30 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 2

Light behaves as both a particle and a wave - but not both at the same time. In some experiments the results say that it must be a wave, in others that it must be made of tiny particles (photons). Light doesn't exhibit the properties of waves and particles simultaneously, it's one or the other... but it's both... so how does it "switch?" To me that's the real question. :-)

Imagine ripples in a pond going around a rock, on the other side side they interfere with each other and make high & low points (look up "double slit experiment"). OK, so light is a wave. Wait! if I shine a metal, I need at least a certain wavelength to knock off an electron. So... light comes in little packets, or particles called photons, instead of a flowing wave. "Hmm..." says Louis deBroglie in 1924, "I wonder if electrons behave the similarly?" Yep, them too! You get a Nobel Prize!

To put it simple, light can behave as both a particle or a wave.

light exists as dual nature. sometimes it behaves as a particle which can be explained by elecromagnetic theory by maxwell and sometimes it behaves as a particle which can be explained by planks quantum theory.

Hi. Photons, which make up light, are both particles and waves, depending on how you measure them. They are both when you don't peek. (This is not a joke!)
