Well... according to "BRITGUIDE---an introduction to Britishisms in the Beatles' Lyrics" - Written by Harold Somers

Quoted "Toe-jam football is a nonsense phrase; it could refer to either American football or British (soccer). "Toe-jam" may refer to an injury but it could be one of Lennon's famous "portmanteau" words...and remember that "jam" in Br.E. means what "jelly" means in Am.E. (in Br.E, "jelly" is American "jello".)"

Well since the Beatles were British, The "football" probably refers to what we yanks call "soccer". Toe Jam can be slang for athelete's foot, or it could be for jammin' your toe at a soccer ball!

I read that it was a reference to rugby, because Paul was a rugby player.
