I'm in the process of retiring from the army (not from work, retirement isn't THAT good) and like the other posters stated, join the military. The majority of the jobs (MOS's) are not combat jobs. In todays army, you will deploy but most of the people in Iraq never go outside the wire due to their mission requirements within the FOB's (bases). You can get the GI Bill also a big signup bonus depending on what job you qualify for and decide to sign up for. Some jobs like linguists can be very lucrative on the outside world. Don't let some recruiter tell you that if you go army reserve, that you won't deploy, reserves and guard units are deploying more than ever now.

You could work your way up through the ranks to manage a McDonald's or some other fast food restaurant. McDonald's even has a college for its managers.

However.... If you enjoy working with your hands and have an eye for detail, consider being a piano tuner/technician. It's not just a trade reserved for old blind men (stereotype!). You don't need "perfect pitch", or even be musical.

My husband mentored with another technician and decided it would be a great career. We've been successfully self-employed for almost 30 years now, tuning and repairing pianos. It is hard work and requires learning troubleshooting skills and how to patiently do repairs. There's always a market for a good piano technician.

If you'd like more information about piano technology, here's a great resource; www.ptg.org. The Piano Technicians Guild sponsors regional and national conventions and seminars throughout the year to teach piano tuning and repair. There are also home-study courses and colleges with a piano technology major.

Good luck!

Join the Military. They will pay, feed and clothe you. They will train you and you can get the GI bill to help pay for college if you decide to go.
