okay, so my fish is still alive, and he can still swim, but when he goes to the bottom, he floats back up again...and he can't stay on the bottom for long...what's wrong with him?

It's one of two things, either he's constipated (really) or he has a swim bladder infection.

Don;t try to feed him for a day or two and then offer him a shelled pea to eat. If e's constipated that will clear things up.

If that doesn't work, he's got a bladder infection that really tought to cure. You can try treating with Furanace to see if that will help him. Just use it as directed on the box for 10 days. If anything will help him that will.

I completely agree with MAGIK MAN sounds like a swim bladder infection( this is a small sack of air that helps keep your fish boyant (floating upright)and your fish is able to squeeze it making it smaller to sink.If this organ becomes infected he will loose controll over his floating and sinking abillity.
A constapation on impaction(twisted intestine) will trap gasses from digessting food in the digastive trackt makeing him flot too. My guess is the first scenario(blader infection)

If your fish is...doing loops and spinns he may have dropsy or spinners disease...

he must have a problem filtering oxygen out of the water thus leading him to go back to the surface

He probably has dropsy

You can make him a lot better with a salt bath - yes they use salt as a cure for fresh water fish.

Here is how to do it but you must use water that has been declorinated.
