I taught High School English. I had some hispanic students who did poorly until we read a novel by Rudolfo Anaya called Bless Me, Ultima. It's about a curandera and her protege. My hispanic students were very interested in it because it delved so deeply into theMexican culture. They were suddenly the experts. They read the book easily because of all the familiar terms and hispanic language used in it. There is a teacher guide available along with worksheets.

Topics that apply to real-life situations: dating, making money conflicts with friends, etc. You will be surprised how much teens open up and discuss concerns they may have if you show that you care.

don't ask us how our day was...that will probably start a huge fight. talk about trends or maybe about today things...don't go back into well in my day...thats annoying. If theres a lot of boys ask em if they have the new xbox 360. or ask them there opinion on things.

as a teenager myself, have them play a funky game which will make them laugh. go to spencer's or toys r us or something to get something wacky. they will open up to you and the language.

hey i'm 17 years old, but since ur not teaching any of my classes u should mess with them a little. wut i mean is like u should scare them like tell them ur givin lots of homework and act mean and stuff for like the first few days. it might make u laugh depending on their reaction. that's wut i'd do and plus my bible teacher did that to me and my bible class. my bible teacher is a cool guy, but he sure scared the hell outta me, lol.
