Let's look at it by decade. In the 60's there was the civil rights movement as well as the freedom of exression; hippy generation. In the 70's it was the sexual revolution and I believe the gay rights movement started then as well. The 80's was known as the era of excess. Big everything from business to hair to big losses (stock market crash). The first AIDS case was reported during the decade. In the 90's there was more of a political movement in the 18-34 age range. In each decade more and more technological advances were made and that continues. In some instances the same issues that occurred in the 60's occur today. Trends that seem hot and new today have just been reborn from past decades. In short, the more things seem to change, the more they stay the same. Drug problems became prevalent in the late 60's and is still a prevailing issue today and will continue. It's called predisposition. What has changed is who is considered a celebrity these days. As opposed to "yesteryear" anyone can be a celebrity with the onset of YouTube and the internet itself. Back in the day, people who were considered celebrities were worth celebrating. Depending on what segment of the culture you are talking about there have been a number of changes.

A tossed salad of many cultures due to the variety of immigrants. Don't forget that white Europeans stole this country from the original inhabitants and brought in African slaves, and cheep labor from the orient.
