Like with most religions, you find people who claim to follow the teachings but who are hypocrites. Your buddhist who ran off with your wife is definately engaging in misconduct and breaking buddhist teachings.
In the 8 fold path, you are advised to have "right" sex. To avoid sexual misconduct.
here is what about.com says about buddhist ideals towards sexual misconduct.
Sexual Misconduct
The moral guidelines for lay people, however, are far less exacting. The third precept advises individuals to abstain from sexual misconduct. In the Buddha's time this was formulated as follows: 'he does not have intercourse with women who are protected by their mother, father...relatives, who have a husband, who are protected by law, or with those who are garlanded in token of betrothal'. In a modern context, the following forms of sexual activity would be considered unwholesome - rape, sexual abuse of minors, bestiality, prostitution, and adultery or unfaithfulness. Misconduct in Buddhism is often defined as that which brings harm to oneself, to others or to both oneself and others. Any sexual activity that does this is therefore to be avoided. The measure of how bad each of these are will depend on the degree of suffering to others and/or oneself.
