Single replacement... The Al switched places with the Ni.

In a single replacement (displacement) 1 single element repalces another single element within a compound. It's like dance partners... Tommy and Susie are dancing. Bobby comes along and cuts in. Then, Bobby and Susie are dancing.

In a double replacement (displacement) two compounds switch elements to make new compounds. If tommy and Susie were dancing again... Bobby comes along with Becky. This time the boys switch partners and Tommy ends up with Becky and Bobby ends up with Susie.

Synthesis is when 1 thing is made out of 2.
Na + Cl ---> NaCl

Decomposition is when 1 thing turns into 2.
NaCl ---> Na + Cl
