Can anyone help regarding the side effects of the MMR vaccination given at 12 month wellness visit?

My son developed a fever immediately after the vaccination. Of course he had other vaccinations as well (the standard). He ran a fever for 2/3 days. However, his behavior has changed. He won't play by himself at all. If I try to play with him he want me to hold him. He buries his face in my legs or the sofa. He'll grab my hands and hold them sometimes rubbing his face in them.

He has seemed weaker and very fussy (clingy too!!). He won't let me leave his sight. Also, he had some small bruises on his thighs (maybe from the injections)? Now, it's exactly one week later and he's running a super high fever 102 with tylenol. I plan on sleeping on his floor and monitoring him every hour through the night.

Is this a normal reaction to the MMR/12 month checkup. He is allergic to eggs and I've found the MMR is made from egg protiens.

TIA!

Hello, I feel so bad for your little one. Vaccines are a hot topic in our house. I say no, my husband says it’s the lesser of two evils. I am not giving my little one her DTaP shots until she is 12 month or older, and not going to give her MMR shots at all. Measles, mumps and rubella are not life threatening deceases and can be cured easily during our time, also the MMR vaccine is not really effective in preventing them in the future. What you are describing is a bad reaction to his vaccine, I would not recommend continuing with MMR shots, especially if he is allergic to eggs. Monitor your son for the next two weeks, it takes that long for things in his body to settle down and give him lots of love and care. Here are a few web sited on the MMR vaccine and reactions. Hope your little one gets better. http://thinktwice.com/mmr.htm

And please report your son’s reaction so that the vaccines would be made safer our kids in the future. Only 2% of people report reactions to vaccines, because of that not much is being done to make them safer. You can do it here https://www.nvic.org/Report/reaction.htm when you have the time.

I cannot directly answer your question, but I was allergic to eggs as a child and my doctor advised my mom to not ever let me be vaccinated with the MMR vaccination. As an adult, I grew out of the egg allergy, and only recently (at 34) got the vaccination without any complications. I would get some medical attention for your son. I hope he gets better.

I would call your doctor or a hospital...Some babies have very severe reactions to some vaccinations. It would be better safe then sorry...I hope he feels better soon!
