Why would Macbeth Act 3 Scene 5 be added if it serves no purpose?

some versions of the play leave it out completely. it remains in some editions because of the controversy and uncertainty around whether shakespeare actually wrote it, and so its left to you to decide if it is in fact his own writing.

I know Shakepseare's plays pretty well, but I don't pretend to be a "scholar" in the academic sense. But, when I read the "Hecate" scene in "Macbeth," I find it virtually impossible to believe that it was written by the same guy who wrote the rest of the text. I've acted in "Macbeth" twice, and I directed it once, and, all three times, that scene was deleted. I don't think it belongs, I don't think it adds anything, I don't think that Wm. Shakespeare wrote it...

And that's all I have to say about that.

It actually serves a huge purpose. In line 10, the witch says, "And, which is worse, all you have done / Hath been but for a wayward son, / spiteful and wrathful, who, as others do, / loves for his own ends, not for you."

This describes the author's attitude, I feel, towards Macbeth. Hecate admonishes the other witches for even cavorting with this man, because he is so ungrateful and selfish and self-absorbed. It's good to see that Macbeth is not the hero of this story that everyone makes him out to be - this is a true tragedy. There is no redemption for this character.
