Cedar and pine are not reccomended as bedding for most small animals. It can cause respiratory problems because of the aromas and dust it releases. Although humans may not be able to smell them, hamsters are more sensitive.

Shredded newspaper is good, though it does not control odor very well. The best products I have ever found are CareFresh and Yesterdays News. Aspen shavings are also a good choice.

Shreeded paper would be ideal!
Recycling is a very good opition
make sure that there is not too much print on the paper as your hamster may develop a dark coloured rear end!
If you know what i mean!

Yes, don't use pine. I have a dwarf hamster and a Guinea Pig and the best bedding to use is Carefresh, they come in bags ranging from really small to really big, it's comfy for the animal too!

Shredding will work if there is nothing toxic in it, and also if you use bedding make sure it is aspen. Pine and Cedar will give the hamster repository and skin diseases.

I use CAREFRESH liter it's really good because it's made from recycled newspaper but is stronger. Regular newpaper is bad because it hurts animal's paws and can make them sick.
