We recently have had a lot of rust in our well water that does not filter out.
I have heard that iron is not good for people over 50, and have concerns about heavy metals in general.
Should I be concerned?
Suggestions for filtration that will clean up the water?

The rust isnt comming from your well.. its comming from your tank or plumbing... iron oxide (rust) isnt typical from a well its somewhere in the plumbing...

Iron rust or iron bacteria is not rust as one thinks. And, filtering won't work, reverse osmosis works, if you have lots of bucks for the system, it's one of the best but most expensive on the market.
Boiling potatoes in water with iron bacteria will turn the water black almost to inky black from the iron concentrate and the chemical action. Washing white shirts will turn them yellow, people with lots of iron bacteria have a real problem and usually haul their water. I've seen people use tanks to haul up to three hundred gallons at a time to cisterns buried in the ground for their personal use.
Drilling deeper in some areas works,a reverse osmosis if one can afford it or live with it if it isn't to bad, haul your water, the last resort.

I got a water softener to take care of my well water problems--you can get a britta water filter and use that for cooking and coffee also clean your water heater and pour a gallon or two of clorox in your well and run all of the outlets until you can no longer smell the bleach. Or you can call the county where you live and pay to have your well tested to see if it is safe. Think about all of our ancestors that ate from iron pots, hmmm. I still have some cast iron I use.

We have well water.
My brother in law just needed another type of filter for his, but the other brother needed another whole diffrent system. Depends on what you got now. if you have a plumbing supply place that deals with water softers have them to send off a sample of your water to be analyzed & they will recomemend the type of system/filter that you may need.

You need to find a water conditioning service that uses reverse osmosis units to remove impurities in the water. Most plain brine type water softeners won't do this.

Other people here can direct you which way to go----I can tell you your local public health has a kit to test your water quality ----the kit has instructions on how to get a useful sample.
