There is no rule of thumb a you may think. Some of the symptoms of having a problem with alcohol is black outs, what did I do last night and why are you mad at me. coming home from work and downing a twelve pack, waking up with a hangover, not being able to function on a daily basis without drinking to feel better, sneaking or hiding booze in different places for convenience, getting plastered by yourself. There are a few symptoms of alcoholism I think you may get my drift by now

I'm an alcoholic and a woman. I have been sober 15 years. There is nothing in AA that specifies an amount you have to drink to be considered an alchoholic. What you do in AA is admit you are powerless over alcohol and that your life has become unmanageable. That's the first step. How much you can physically drink has nothing to with it. It's what alcohol does to you that has everything to do with it.
Alcohol made me a very dishonest person. I hurt a lot of people. I was sexually promiscuous. I lost a lot of things due to alcohol, like my self respect. I lost the trust of many people. I lied to people. All I wanted was to get drunk again. I loved the way it made me feel...until the next day, that is.
When I joined AA, I was at the lowest point of my life. I thought so little of myself. I hated what I had become. It has taken 15 years to gain back my self respect and I have spent those 15 years making amends to people I have hurt. I have learned to be honest. It was very humiliating.
I'm not proud of being a drunk. I'll always be one. What I am proud of is 15 years of continuous sobriety and the changes I've made in those 15 years.
Here's to another 15!!
PS I was only 22 when I went into AA. I'm now 37.

There is no specific amount that determines whether someone is an alcoholic. Every person is different. Here are some characteristics of alcoholics:
Needs it every day to relax.
Frequently drinks alone.
Plans day around when he/she can drink.
Needs more to achieve the same effect i.e., 2 beers once worked to get drunk and now needs 3.
Drinking is affecting work life or personal life in a significant way. For example, person might be late to work because of being hung over or wife might be bothered by frequent drinking.

Simple test: Go out for a beer. Have say 2, then stop.
Simple test 2: drink 1 beer a day for a period of time.
A real alcoholic can't do either for more than a few days. She or he will come up with an excuse to get loaded.
I know, been there done that, many years sober now.

I liked their checklist. (see below)
however I think it is much too strict - I don't think the questions have equal weight.
In general over the years I have been losing respect for A.A. based on how they treat people.
Light to moderate drinking would be 1 to 2 beers at night. perhaps 1 during the day.
Now beer can be a calorie problem... :)
But Much more, like a litre a day suggests a problem.
A main indicator is how easily can a person start and stop.

It is the difference between stopping for a cold one, just one, and having to drink.
