I am renting a house that is not in compliance with the city. The house is not registered as a rental property, meaning that it has not had the proper inspections need. I've been living here since September of 2006 and my lease is up in September of 2007, what should I do.

Accept the conditions as is or move out. Depends how well you get along with the landlord and if the rent is afordable. Unless you have the time and money to take your landlord to court, I would just find another place if the conditions are that bad.

Now if you've brought hazardous conditions to the attention of your landlord and he's done nothing about it, then pay your rent o the county housing court in your area and they will have a hearing and bring him into court to answer to your concerns.

What do you mean not in compliance. In NYC if one is a property owner one can rent but there are conditions and if you didn't realize wow You will learn from this one unless the property has been illegally altered like one room made into two
or if a one family has been chopped into a two family then move other wise if you signed a lease and you move out before the lease is finished you will be held accountable for the rest of the rent. And they can take you to small claims court for the remainder of rent. And 99% of time if a lease in effect you will pay. And that also happens with commercial and residential rentals.

If you don't have any problems with the property, what is the problem?

Just make sure you have renters insurance (something you should have anyway) and you won't have anything to worry about.

I'm not sure why you feel you need to do anything?

If you are having problems with the place, then call the people it should be registered with, and tell them you are renting a property and he's not taking care of it. Let them go after the landlord.

If you have been happy keep going. Just from the question you must be at least half way happy or you would just move. Since you have been there for a year yo might be able to get the landlord to update several things, or at a minimum keep the rent the same. You both win.

Why would you want to make trouble where you live? The first thing the city would do is force you to move out. If that's what you want, fine, but why would you do that? All these other answers are wondering the same thing. I hope you update this question.

If you are having a problem then move. If not then stay, and enjoy what you have.
