i think it was a very bad decision. Ryan Smyth was there heart and soul. ever since that trade the oilers have gone downhill.

It wasn't supposed to be a good idea. They were trying to resign him, but that wasn't working, so Kevin Lowe (their GM) decided to trade him for a better future (2 good young players and a 1st round draft pick). Lowe himself said after the trade that it didn't make their team better. I wouldn't be surprised if they signed him in the off-season. And to the previous answerer, I too would love to him him in a Flames jersey

Terrible decision for the Oilers and the NHL allowing rental players. Why would anyone want to watch an Oilers game now without Ryan Smyth. It's a boring, watered down product. It's like watching university hockey.

'downhill' isn't strong enough a word. They're practically 0-12 since the trade! They still had an outside shot at the playoffs before the trade too.

Also, while I wouldn't be surprised if Smyth does resign with the Oilers, I don't think he will, not after what they did. Be even worse for them if he signs with Calgary, I'll get a good laugh out of that.

I think the Houston Oilers made a mistake in trading future NFL Superstar Ryan Smyth

Heh, it wasn't really a plan... They had to dump him for SOMETHING rather than lose him for nothing in free agency. They players they got are young, and could have some upside later, we'll see.

I don't think they WANTED to trade Smyth, and could look pretty clever if he signs with them in the offseason, as they got some players from New York for nothing...

This being said, losing Smyth has been terrible for an already struggling team. I don't think they've won since he's left, which is about 12 games or something like that... Ugly.

I still chuckle at the Marc Andre Bergeron trade, he's been money in New York... But really wasn't in Edmonton... I guess a different system to play in... Though Edmonton is looking silly in that trade too.

Why would he WANT to go back? They've lost their last 12, are OUT of the playoffs. It was a horrible idea to get rid of him, and the manner in which they dealt him, no way in hell does Ryan Smyth ever go back to Edmonton. Sign with the Leafs, say goodbye to Sundin.

Flames fan had the right answer until the 2 very good young players part. I would have said 2 serviceable young players. They could have done better when you look at what teams were giving once the market was set with a broken down Peter Forsberg.

they had to let him go to at least get something for him rather than risking him walking away for nothing for a more lucrative contract elsewhere. He becomes a free agent after the season is over and the oilers always have a chance to resign him again.

I thought it was a bad idea for Ryan Smyth to demand 5.7 million dollars when he was offered 5.4 million dollars. He had it coming to him.

they have sucked since - but 2 youngsters and a draft pick for a guy who will be wearing another teams jersey next year anyways is a good deal - He won't sign with the Isles - most players hate playing with Yashin
