The Colossus was on the island of Rhodes, a far distance from Gibraltar. He stood on a breakwater in Mandraki Harbor.

Ancient accounts differ somewhat on the exact placement of the statue. Some record that it was placed on a pair of 50-foot white marble pedestals straddling the Mandraki harbor entrance. Other accounts have the statue placed on a breakwater within the harbor.
