Too hard on the kids? I think it'd be too hard on the teachers! ;) But then, that is coming from a first year teacher that can't wait for *Spring Break*. As for the kids--yes, there is some "loss" over the summer...I suspect with many of the "year round schedules" I have seen, the same problem would occur with every break (there are more breaks, just shorter, throughout the year)...and in the end, I suspect the amount of time reteaching/reviewing would be much the same. Though, having breaks throughout the year might pose a problem for parents and day care situations.

there are cons and pros to each one. year round the breaks are a little longer so its fair and they get the same amount of time or more off. They are going to school almost constantly and therefore are better at remembering information.
The regular years are seem shorter and just a regular school. Yea they lose some information over the summer but at least the kids have a sense of break and off school instead of 2 week long breaks every few months. Something to work for aka the end of the year.

There are a lot of pros and cons on this issue. Some of the positives are that students aren't away from school for so long that they forget what they learned at the end of a traditional school year. Another is that it is easier for parents and students to plan vacations together without kids missing during the school year. I'm not one of the pros on this issue. I'm a teacher and I need that summer time off to recharge my batteries, so to speak. I take classes, go to conferences and meetings, prepare for the upcoming year (this can take up to 2 months), and if I have time I take a vacation. Too, I think if school is going to be a year-round proposition, then each building needs to be air conditioned. Districts that have older buildings aren't air conditioned, and in the sweltering heat of summer it's hard for kids, and teachers, to focus on learning.
Good luck on your debate!

Kids adapt really quickly, it's the parents that have the problem. Retention of material is supposed to be better in year around schools The only real issue to me is health. In those schools where heat is an issue and classrooms are not air conditioned, heat can cause children lots of problems including aggravating asthma and passiing out.

Two drawbacks: kids who have to work to take care of them self or save up for college and kids who need to repeat a class in summer school. I was college prep and had to repeat math all three years of high school.
Pro: I think it's easier if you stay in the groove year round. That would not work in Southern California ~~~ too hot ~~~ no air conditioning.

i thought we was doing a debate ? dont you think you couldve took the time to find your own argument ? then i couldve sounded off oppisite and then really give you some ideas. as it stands i think school , in general is the key so whatever the childrens parents of that district want should be what they get . p. s. - who cares if its too hard on the kids ? aint nothing in life going to come easy and the kids should be taught that from day one .

well i think summer is good for kids. i think they need a break. its really not that long if you think about it. It has always been this way, why change it now. Kids can enjoy summer fun, summer camps, fishing, camping, beach, canoeing, waterskiing, jet skiing, pow wows, and all the summer sports that are going on. I know a lot of kids that go to educational camps during the summer to so i believe that they should have summers off!!!!
