Oprah has achieved the American Dream. She has power, respect, influence and money. She pursued her dreams despite being black and a woman.
Many people are jealous of this.
The only problem I ever had with Oprah is that all of the blessing she was given came from God but she wasn't giving him his 'props' so to speak. As she has gotten older, she is starting to publicly acknowledge that God is the ultimate source of all that she has.
I think she was a sellout when she wasn't publicly showing Him gratitude.

I don't think that she is a sellout to the African American community. Regardless, of having a much more accomodated life than the rest of us, she has used her wealth to make significant contributions to both African Americans and the mainstream communities.

Also, (whether it be for self gain or not) when she does anything (good or bad) she does do it for or by, in a sense, the African American community. I believe that she is very much aware that the stigma put on her is greater than whatever intentions she may have.

Again, regardless...God bless her for doing what most of the people may not even dream about doing.

Being an african american myself, i would say no. I honestly dont think Oprah is a sell out to the black community. For one, she hasnt done anything in my eyes to be labelled as a sellout. And for her building that school in Africa, if that was her dream, Im glad she went for it. I cant be mad because she never built one here. That's her choice and her money as well. She can do what ever she wants with it!

No. She's really an American icon which shows to the whole world that if you have talent and education, you would go far in the USA inspite of your color. She started from humble begininnings, and look at her now. With her wealth, she helps the needy African Americans through her Angels Network have new schools in Africa and have new beautiful houses (for the Katrina victims) in America.

Absolutely! How many schools (or anything) has she built for African-Americans in the USA? If she just donated a million (the 1st school was 40 million!) - a lot of people could be better off! She is slowly losing her integrity!

...yes, and i have thought that for a while..even tho i was, and still am a die-hard oprah fan, and will always watch her...there are hardly any of her shows anymore that aren't heavily targeted to the afro-amer public...i think she is on a bandwagon, with her school in africa, and she is wanting to be idolized, like other great leaders, etc....her friend mayou ang..is a good example...plus the fact that she did not grow up as poor as she wants everyone to think...at the east nashville high school, she had more than i did...

No. I think Oprah is an outstanding example to women and girls of any color. The woman started out as a fleeping maid's helper, and look at her now. she does many humanitarian projects, and gives away a lot of money. Oprah is an american icon.

I find it interesting a white guy is asking this question. Oprah is a successful, educated entrepreneur who is a credit to her race. Those in the African American community who label her an Uncle Tom are jealous, ignorant losers; in my opinion.
