I am so upset after reading most of these posts. I am from the New Orleans area and lost EVERYTHING. I had to dig 2 feet of mud out of my house and throw away everything I worked for - I did not save ONE item. I am not whining, I am just sharing my experience. No one knows half of whats going on down here, and that after 2 years, its still the SAME as the day Katrina hit. Nothing is being done .. you hear on TV how they are giving us money .. they DONT! We are asking for money because it is our goverments fault for why we flooded. My entire family and myself grew up about 15 miles south of New Orleans, and never even had water in the street .. who would have thought our houses would have 13 feet of water in them? Every single person I know does not have a house anymore. All of my friends and everyone in my family lost EVERYTHING. It wasnt just a couple of miles. It was an ENTIRE CITY. My parish, St. Bernard Parish, was completely destroyed. Not one building or home is left. It was my senior year of high school when Katrina hit .. it was supposed to be the best year of high school. Instead, I had to start a new school, with no one I knew, while living in a hotel with 7 other people and 2 dogs. I lived in the same house for 19 years, and in 2 months, moved from this persons house to that persons house at least 9 times. I didnt see any of my friends, even my best friends that I saw everyday. All my friends and family lived in St. Bernard Parish. Now, I have friends and family in California, Atlanta, Texas, Maryland, Miami, Georgia, Mississippi, Ohio ... It kills me. Please do not say that we are whining. We just want people to care and take the time to think about us and what we have gone through. We have been telling the government for 40 years about our levee protection, and they did NOTHING and still are doing NOTHING. They just "repaired" our levees, and come to find out, they put broken pipes. So, in the end, I guess I will have to leave the place I grew up and love so much.

you're suitable. Mississippi even have been given screwed over via hurricane Katrina. yet, i assume each physique seems to the worst of what exceeded off, and purely ingredient to New Orleans. even although, if the human beings had listened before while, while the French instructed them to not build a city down there, then there does not be as many problems as there are suitable now. yet i assume issues take place for a reason. And stupidity will harm interior the long-run.

I spent a total of 5 weeks in 2005 working for the American Red Cross in Florida and southern Mississippi, helping hurricane victims. There were thousands of us, but no matter how hard we worked, it seemed like we just couldn't help all those who needed help. It was a sobering experience. We had mental health counselors monitoring us constantly to make sure that we were OK and were able to do the job needed.
I am still angry about the sluggishness of the Federal Govt. in this matter. I think it is up to us all to do what we can to make sure that this kind of nonsense never happens again. At the same time, I want to extend my thanks to the Mississippi National Guard for their professional assistance and protection while we Red Cross'ers did our work.

I have family living in New Orleans and Waveland, Ms.. They are still struggling, but they are slowly, very slowly, recovering.
They can't forget Katrina and neither can I.
No Lori, You do not know what you are talking about at all. This wasn't a city or a county. Silly, silly person. This affected an entire region of this country. I bet you were tired of hearing the whining when you were watching the black Americans float around in the sewerage.
The Coast Guard are greatly loved by New Orleanians. There isn't a decent New Orleanian alive who wouldn't welcome any Coast Guardsman into their homes and treat them like family.

There were many I felt sorry for and even camped out in a local town that the buses were passing though here in Texas to give them food, water, and clothing when many were turned away in Houston. It was the most horrible thing I had ever saw in my life. They were being shipped like cattle from one rodeo to another. They had nowhere to go and no one wanted them, how could something like this happen? A few of us families pulled together and took out of our own pockets, homes and took donated items to help them. There were even a couple of families that were placed in housing here.....But then there are the ones who took advantage of so many trying to help and ended up doing some pretty horrible things. For the ones who were honest and needed the help, I would do it all over again...For those who only hurt those who helped them, well one day they will answer for what they have done.

I'm tired of the whining. More money was poured into New Orleans than has EVER gone to flood victims in the past. Floods happen EVERY year. Whole counties in states are still coming back from floods that happened 10 years ago. That's the way it is. When you chose to live in an area that has the potential to be ravaged by floods, then you have to live with the consequences.

Can you imagine? what we spend in Iraq in one month would rebuild the gulf coast! For 38 billion dollars, we could help our own people. Halliburton couldn't even get ice there.
