Most make less than $14K/yr. Many are purely volunteers. The going rate for an EMT where I live is $7.60/hr, with only a $0.25 increase for an EMT II and a $0,50 increaes for an EMT III.

EMT-Basic salaries vary widely, but in my area an EMT-B will commonly only be paid about $10-$12 an hour at most. There are plenty of overtime opportunities, but bottom line is EMT-B's are seriously underpaid. Paramedics in my area tend to average around $45,000 - $50,000 a year. Most of those positions are through fire departments in my area. Other areas will have private companies or municipal or county EMS systems instead of having the fire department handle EMS as well as fire. I recently was job hunting for paramedic positions. I did not want to work for a fire department, and I did not want to work for a private ambulance companies. I looked at paramedic positions around the country that were through city & county health departments, and I found that many of them were paying around the $45,000 mark plus very nice benefit packages that are worth at least another 8 to 10 thousand a year. Hope that helps.
