Yes, to keep them fresh and so that the air pressure keeps the balls in better condition.

Let's just consider one tennis ball, because the answer will be the same. This is just a sphere packed tightly inside a cylinder. The formula for the volume of a sphere is: 4/3 π r^3 The formula for the volume of a cylinder is: π r² * h Notice how h = 2r. So the ratio of the ball to total space is: 4/3 π r^3 / 2 π r^3 The r^3 terms cancel out (e.g. it doesn't matter if you had tennis balls, basket balls, the earth, etc. The ratios would be the same). π also cancels out. = (4/3) / 2 = 4/6 = 2/3 That means the ball is 2/3 of the space. And the air is 1/3 of the space. (Note: This wouldn't change with 3 balls. There would be 3 times as many spheres, but the height of the cylinder would also be 3 times as much. The percentage of air doesn't change). Answer: 33 1/3% air

It's to keep the balls under pressure so that they won't be all soft and deformed when you open the can for the first time. The ball cans are air sealed shut, so that no moisture can get in an ruin the ball's condition. When you don't use the tennis balls, always keep them in their can so that you can use them for a longer period of time.

There are two kinds: pressured balls and unpressured tennis balls.
the ones in the sealed cylinders are the pressured ones, there's a seal to keep the ball fresh (just like sodas in can), pressurized, air-tight, and bouncy.
the ones that comes in dozens in a bag are not pressurized they still bounce and work great but they have less air in them. if you press hard on an unpressurized ball it feels very empty compared to the ones that comes in cans.
hope this helped!

Cans of balls are packaged that way so that the balls will stay "fresh", meaning retaining their bounce and felt. It's just to help the balls keep their original composition.

They keep the air pressure tight around the balls. They will be very flat if there is no pressure. There are no pressure ball that come without the can, but I haven't heard good things about them.

To keep the pressure in the can so the balls will not go flat.

to keep out moisture, because they would be ruined if they were trapped in there and moisture got in. Moreover to stop the balls from losing pressure. also maybe to put people off stealing them? as it would make a large noise when you open them, and would draw attention in a shop.
