Why do people cut themselves?

Why do people cut themselves? I just don't get it.

Yes I was watching MTV True Life, just wondering why people would do something like that. I've felt depressed before but I can't imagine cutting myself.

Some people cut themselves because they want to cope with depression (feel relief) or feel the pain on the inside rather than the outside. Then u have people that cut because they think it's "cool." Along with other reasons.

Okay, if a person shows you they cut, then they're looking for attention (which isnt necessarily a bad thing looking for attention).
I know from my own personal experience my mates cut because it was a sort of "release". I was told than when you get stressed or you're hurt or whatever it builds up and you need to release it and get it out of your system (literally). So by cutting and releasing the blood it gives off a sense of relief.
I don't know exactly if this is the only reason, having never cut before, but it is an important one.

For some people, it is just to feel something. They feel so emotionally dead that pain is the only thing they can feel. They are often depressed. If you know someone that is doing this, please convince them to get help.

Its the same reason an alcoholic drinks, or a heroin user shoots up.
