In order to make your wishes officially known, you have to name the godfather as her GUARDIAN (godfather is a religious title, not a legal one). Check with the laws in your state, but we found a form on-line written for just that purpose. We filled it out, signed it, and had it notorized (and gave copies to both sets of grandparents). There is no doubt who our kids are supposed to go to if we both die!

Transfer custody to her godfather before you die by having the godfather adopt her now.

Other than that, the finaly decision is up to the courts, which are required to act in the best interests of the child. But you can set forth your wishes, which the court will usually at least consider.

Write a living will stating that among what else you want. e.g DNR(Do not Resuscitate order), Do not want to be on life supports, etc... Basically anything you think might happen as well as what and where you want personal items to go, and who will have custody and care for ???

This is much too serious to ask on this format. Talk to an attorney and make up a will . He will guide you thru all this.
Good luck
And Congrats for looking ahead.

You don't mention the child's father. He has rights too, unless you can prove him unfit. Adoption would require his consent even if his name is not on the birth certificate but can prove he is the father. SEE AN ATTORNEY. Commit yourself to raising this child.

I deleted my answer to your other question about spanking - I didn't mean to come off that way. Everyone has a right to their opinion and although I don't agree with yours, my answer was immature and rude.

Your best bet is to get a will and specify it in your will. It will also need to be notarized to be considered legal.
