Pick the classics to start with, in particular things you might like: are you adventurous? if so, try Robinson Crusoe or Lord of the Flies or Jules Verne.
Do you like science fiction? In that case, I'd recommend Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein, or The Coming of the Quantum Cats by Frederick Pohl.
For mystery stories, try classic Sherlock Holmes novels, or for more modern mysteries, The Best Amercian Mystery Stories of 2006, edited by Scott Turow.
If you have a very vivid imagination, or just are feeling lighthearted and silly, try Piers Anthony's The Magic of Xanth series beginning with A Spell for Chameleon.
Happy hunting!
