As I said, I've got a 2001 Honda cr125r, and I'm going to have the engine rebuilt because it's didly squat for compression and leaks out the exhaust bad because of blow past. Now I'm only rebuilding the top end, but I'm concerned if considering I'm going this far anyway should I have the bottom end inspected and just go ahead and replace all the gaskets while I'm at it? I want what's best for my bike, and that's why I'd like more than my opinion on this subject. Thanks for your help!!

As far as gaskets go, any you take out should be replaced, not re-used. A gasket may LOOK good and still not seal. Gaskets get compressed when installed, and take a set.

I admit, you have me a little confused. You are asking about major work, and saving pennies at the same time. Unfortunately they don't go hand in hand.

The head set is going to be expensive enough, but that Honda's kind of young to need all that- the leaks are real, though. There's a story in the spark plugs. Take them out and see what shape they're in. They'll tell if you're burning oil, have a low compression condition, bad fuel mix- you have to read them. You can replace the seals on the valve cover and correct the oil problem. The shaking and loss of power can come from worn out spark plugs or a host of other maintenance-related issues. A few easy repairs might give a huge improvement. Tune it up and check the cam belt. They get old, stretch, lose teeth and performance degrades exponentially until k'pow- the car don't run no more. Before you decide to pull the head, be confident you can replace it and get the cam timing right. A rebuilt head is not going to be cheap.

I would suggest yes. But if they are fine then maybe you should just leave it. Sometimes changing a gasket that is OK can generate a bad seal and you may have to replace gasket a 2nd time. Go with your gut.

Yes, it is worth the extra to have all that cases that are opened sealed with new gaskets.
