There are components listed in Device Manger.... are all of them "software" or "drivers"? There are things that says there like adapters and controllers. Are they also software?

They are as follows in this description. They are driver written in the for of software that are only design to to do minor things such as control those hardware devices you see. If removed they could cause minor system errors or total system crashes.

They are the hardware installed in your pc. Drive controllers, modems Network adapters Ect. When there is a hardware problem or conflict a yellow (?) or a (!) will appear next to the effected device. If a red (X) is there , the device is disabled. You can right click an anything on the list and enable, disable,troubleshoot,update drivers and such. But never remove anything.

The components listed in Device manager are all the hard ware devices that are internally or externally connected to your computer.. Each hardware device has a device specific driver that is provided by the manufacturer of the hardware device. for example your CD-Rom drive will have drivers that make it work in accordance with your Operating system....

So same hardware device will have different drivers for different operating systems....
