fewer darkies? Wow, Ralph surely doesnt know what he's on about. In the 50's there were crimes, when oppressed people were trying to gain freedom and respect from their oppressors.

To answer your question: On the outside, yes we have come far. Legally the rights are better than before, but obviously and unfortunately there are those many peoples who still have their equal rights abused by racists. The KKK still exists, as do Nazi followers and many other racial groups, and they still practice and preach their beliefs to others. When you look closer at a nation (america aspecially) you see all of this.

An interesting fact i recently learned in my psychology class is people today react differently when viewing just a persons eyes. Unfortunately i cannot find an internet source but i suggest you look this up. When people viewed a black persons eyes they reacted will less comfort when compared to viweing a white persons eyes. So it may be in our nature today to view coloured people in a bad way. But that's for you to interpret.

What I have to say is not meant to be anything but a starting point for dialog. We have come a long way, yet we are no where near where we should be. One problem is some Blacks have a welfare mentality and want to blame everyone and/or everything, which is perpetuated by racists like Jesse Jackson, Spike Lee and others like them. That is not to say that some people are not racist, but the vast majority of people are not inherently racist. My point is that Blacks (not just Blacks but everyone) need to take responsibility for who they are and how they live. We have many successful Blacks in this country and they got to where they are by hard work. Do you think Bill Cosby, Colin Powell, Condalesa Rice, Barack Obama, Oprah...got to where they are by chance. No they worked their asses off!!!

It's as different as night and day as far as blacks and whites are concerned. There's a video series that traces the civil rights movement called "Eye on the Prize." Things have changed dramatically for the better. Unfortunately as long as human life exists there will be racists in this world.

of course we came along way. Just because of things like I don't have to be worried about being hanged because I looked at a white woman, I went to the college I wanted to and was refused because they don't allow people of my race to enter (like they did before the 50's) etc.

But that doesn't mean we still don't have a long way to go before we truly have race equality.

There have been studies shown that someone will be more likely to get a call back for a job interview because they are white and not black.

or Blacks are more likely to be placed in remedial classes then whites.

that if a black person and a white person where in trial for the same crime the Black person will more likely spend more time in jail.

etc, etc

Definately, more blacks are in the middle class and beyond then ever. over 65%. We still have a long way to go.

somewhat yes however the racial element didn't have a voice back then but they do now . every race is represented in this country which is why we have lesser violence against another race based strictly on race .

Not really. If a person of color gets beat up its a "hate crime," if a white person gets beat up he was just beat up. Go figure.
