1. a. As for why the US got involved, Americans feared the "domino theory" of expanding communist empires. The Truman doctrine stated that America would assist governments resisting communism.
b. American interests in the middle east in regard to oil rubber and tin, were dangerously close to North Vietnam.

2. The first U.S. troops entered Vietnam in March 1965. Until 1969, North Vietnam and the United States did most of the fighting. By 1969, the Vietnam War seemed endless, and the United States slowly began to withdraw troops

3. DMZ Demilitarized Zone. The DMZ was the area around the 17th parallel, the temporary boundary between North and South Vietnam established by the Geneva Accords in 1954. There was not supposed to be any military activity in the DMZ.

4. The USSR provided military and financial aid, along with diplomatic support to the North Vietnamese as did the People's Republic of China. Czechoslovakia, East Germany, and North Korea provided minor assistance through provision of supplies and armor.
