Well, I use Avast Home Edition! I love it, its free, very effective, and will check for virus updates whenever you go on-line.. generally once or twice a day. You will get a registration e-mail and copy and past the registration key in where it asks you to. Why pay for something when a program that's free does the job so well?
As for pop-up blockers I use Yahoo Toolbar, also free and seems pretty good, I seldom get pop-ups especially with Internet Explorer 7. Just a suggestion.

Well, use the FireFox browser. First of all, it is much less vulnerable to pop-ups and viruses.

http://firefox.com

internet explorer is pathetic...

Second, I recommend you install the Ad-Block and Flash-Block extensions!

Lastly, download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy

http://spybot.com/

It removes lots of spyware and ad-ware, which are most common on the internet. Viruses are for chumpy little hackers, who like to mess up peoples computers. Spyware and adware are the main threats. Don't make enemies on the internet and you won't have as much problems with hackers.

Honestly, McAfee provides the best protection against virus. It helps you prevent and cure.

But experience and knowledge are what can keep you away from threats.
