He's dead. How do I keep this from happening again to my others?

Chances are he died of something else. Goldfish are hearty swimmers (unless they are lionheads) and usually don't get caught in the filter.

First off, what are your water readings in the tank? your ammonia and nitrate? how about the temperature? This could have been the start of your problem. Also, how large is your tank? Goldfish need lots of dissolved oxygen. This dissolved oxygen only gets into your tank by way of filter and powerheads.

Try dropping the water level in your tank 1/2 inch to add DO2 to the tank.

Also, a small pill bottle or plastic bottle (this can act as your "cage" although they do sell the add on's) on your filter intake will help keep your fish from getting SUCKED into it. Be sure the bottle is 1/8-1/4 larger or better than the intake tube. Light plastic will hold to the filter and this will not only still allow water and debris to enter your filter but also keep your fish from being harmed. Also, you may want to drop the intake more to the bottom of the tank.

Sorry about your fish.

I encountered this problem several times with my own tank. As others have said: some kind of cage around the filter. The cage should fit in such a way that the inflow does not allow a fish to be sucked in by a force greater than what they can swim against.

I think he probably died and got sucked in by the filter afterwards. They ussually can outswim filter currents. Make sure there is some type of grille over the intake part of your filter. Your other fish will be fine. Ive had fish tanks most of my life and lots of times when one of my fish has died ive found it stuck to the filter.

Goldfish don't stick to filters unless they are sick. Do you have a big enough tank to support their bioload? What are the water readings?
